Bottling homemade beer: capping
Making beer at home is now a widespread trend all over the world. Over the years, a term has even been coined to indicate this activity: homebrewing.

Although homebrewing is a widespread hobby on a large scale, in Italy it was only introduced a few years ago, in fact, the practice of homebrewing became legal only in 1995 (for purely personal production and use).
This pastime, which requires a lot of passion and time, is constantly growing, especially among young beer enthusiasts who try to create new flavors and re-propose disused beer styles to drink with family and friends.

Homebrewing requires minimal equipment, but this does not mean that it is a quick and easy activity.
Finding the material for homebrewing is not difficult at all nowadays, you can find everything you need online or in dedicated shops: from the fermentation kit to the bottle, complete with label, up to the personalized cap.
Once you've bought everything you need, you're ready to produce!
Homebrewing requires a lot of study; you have to find the right ingredients, times and measures to achieve the desired flavor, but when you find it, the game is done…or almost!

Bottling: priming, racking and capping

The most difficult part of homebrewing is the bottling which ends with the capping. Before proceeding with the bottling phase, however, priming is carried out.
Priming is a technique that consists in adding fermentable sugar to the drink which will produce carbon dioxide and will be kept inside the bottle.
To avoid contamination problems that could damage the taste of the beer, it is essential to properly wash and sterilize the bottles and caps that will come into contact with the liquid.
At the end of this process, the drink is ready to be poured into the bottle and then corked.

Crown cork or cork cap: how to choose the right closure for home-brewed beer

Choosing the most suitable type of closure for your beer is not an easy choice, in principle, the two types of cap most used to close homemade beer bottles are:

  • Classic crown cork 26 or 29 mm
  • Cork cap

The cork cap represents a very traditional and aesthetically beautiful choice but it is certainly a "problematic" closure because it could generate a fungus inside which gives the beer the classic corky taste, which is often found in wines.

The 26 or 29 mm crown cork is the most popular choice among homebrewers.

This type of cap is made up of metallic material and an internal liner that avoids direct contact between the liquid and the closure. The crown also has a higher sealing level than the cork and this helps to better preserve the contents of the bottle, so as not to deteriorate the flavor of the beer.

Finally, the possibility to customize the crown cork makes it more attractive and fun allowing you to carry a message or identify your own brand.
In fact, just to satisfy the needs of smaller artisan producers, in 2020, Pelliconi opened its first e-commerce website where anyone can draw and build graphically their own crowns in very small lots and with an infinite number of designs.

So, if the idea of brewing your own beer tickles your mind, don’t let it stop you!

Have a great adventure!
